Government relations consultant honored for lifelong work to enhance relationship between United States and Japan
MIAMI -- AUGUST 23, 2016 – José Keichi Fuentes, a senior government relations consultant with law firm Becker & Poliakoff, has been awarded the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ 2016 Commendations. The high honor is awarded annually to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in promoting positive relationships between Japan and other countries.
Fuentes was selected for his development of the sister cities relationship between Miami and Kagoshima, a partnership noted for building mutual understanding between both countries. He has served as chairman of the Miami Kagoshima Sister Cities Committee since 2002, traveled to Kagoshima City in November – his third delegation – to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the sister cities’ relationship. Miami City Mayor Tomas Regalado joined him on that trip.
“I am honored and humbled to receive this prestigious commendation and look forward to continuing my work to further strengthen the relationship between the United States and Japan,” Fuentes said. “The long-standing cooperation and collaboration between the United States and Japan is increasingly critical as society becomes more global and our challenges more complex.”
With more than 30 years of experience working in government and the political arena, Fuentes focuses his practice at Becker & Poliakoff on representing public entities and private sector clients on issues such as safety, infrastructure and program funding at the state and local levels.
Of Cuban and Japanese descent, Fuentes has been deeply involved in activities enhancing the relationship between Japan and the U.S. for many years. He is widely recognized for his work organizing high school exchange trips for students from Miami and Kagoshima.
